My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic. I upgraded to the Polaroid Land Camera, SX70, Rolleicord with light meter and 120 film, and finally I found my photo partner in a Pentax SLR in high school. My interest in photography was inspired by long drives through the Wisconsin countryside. I witnessed the rapidly changing landscape, and I wanted to document the disappearing visual history of the area. After studying photography for a few years at design school, I made my way to NYC. I regret not taking photos during my early NY years. I lived in the dangerous, burned out East Village of the 80s, and I was reluctant to brandish my camera, for fear of being robbed. I acquired a digital point and shoot camera in the 90s, and so I resumed my photo documentation. Now I am at the mercy of pixel counts, and annoyed that old photos lose their relevance when the new higher resolution version comes out. When Instagram and the iPhone entered my world, something magical happened. Photography became a social endeavor and the documenting of life, an everyday thing. I love how it made me even more aware of my surroundings. My photography improved a lot by seeing so many images from accomplished artists. What was initially inspiring about Instagram is now over. I still endeavor to delve deeper, to discover additional meaning and purpose, and to continue to explore the world around me through my photography. * * *
